Choreography~

Thursday, June 12th, 2008

Ever since I choreographed my first dance (a jazz/modern piece to Papaya’s song “Cinderella”) back in 8th grade, I’ve been constantly improvising dances on the streets, in my house, in random hallways.. basically anywhere there is room to do a few leaps and turns without crashing into valuables. To confess the truth, ever since 9th grade I have stayed up late nights for the sole purpose of dancing around to music from my mp3 player or stereo, and my secret ambition is to choreograph for the stage.

I’m not quite sure of the number of routines I already have in my repertoire, but some of the more prominent ones include:
- Papaya (jazz/modern solo from 8th grade; I went over the time limit by 2 minutes)
- Itooshii Hito no Tame ni (ribbon fan solo from 8th grade)
- Elysium (a ribbon dance duet I did with Ryo back in 9th grade)
- Respect (jazz/hiphop choreographed with Ryo, Leighanne, and Sarah in 9th grade)
- Pompeii (modern dance for quartet, created for 10th grade, but everyone didn’t want to learn something so hard or use BGM so heavy and epic, so we ended up doing some pop song “Perfect Day” instead)

The main purpose of this post, however, is not to reminisce of choreographed routines of days past. Rather, it is to announce my latest work, which will be a full-scale ballet routine for a team of about 50: the Battle scene from the Chronicles of Narnia’s first installment. After listening to the battle BGM for about 12 hours straight, I started creating images in my mind of how an epic dance to this would unfold. While my siblings were out at swim team, I actually got out of my chair and tried to do a few moves in my office (a difficult feat, as there isn’t much room). I have a pretty good feel for the way the routine should play out, how different characters should be personalized, and how lighting should accommodate. In case you’ve no interest at all in the performing arts, I’ve put the details of the aforementioned properties under a “read more” cut.

Summer cleaning.

Friday, June 6th, 2008

Yeah, we don’t do spring cleaning at my house; we do summer cleaning. That is, I spent my entire day (3pm to 10pm) cleaning my room, and I’m STILL not done. Yeah, my room was pretty bad to begin with, so I can’t really blame anyone but myself. We’re actually in the process of stripping down our house and putting it back together again, it seems, due to the fact that my uncle is flying down tomorrow from Washington, specifically for my graduation! I’m excited, but that also means I won’t be able to stay up late on the computer for a few days, haha. Instead, I’ll be up playing cards and watching dramas and other such things.

I really hate to relapse into my old habits of making lists all the time, but I feel the need to mention the items with which my summer will be filled:

SUMMER SCHEDULE OF KILLER BUSY AWESOME
- Mornings: TCG work & hard drive cleaning (I’ve been trying, unsuccessfully, to organize my external for about three years, and it never seems to progress anywhere..)
- Afternoons: SnM work & instrument practice/composition
- Evenings: miscellaneous web design & Crimsonietta.net
- Whenever it will fit: learn more computer programming languages (Python, Perl, brush up on Ruby, C++) and hang out with friends before I have to leave them

For the month of June, I was also left in charge of coordinating the Love of China’s dances for a fundraising activity on the 28th to be held at the RRPAC, also for the earthquake/tsunami victims in China. Our director is going out of the country (she left yesterday morning, actually) so rather than getting a room mother to coordinate, she entrusted me with the studio keys, music CDs, and correspondance information. Simply speaking, it’s my job to get everyone together to rehearse and make arrangements.

Even though it’s a significant amount of work, it hardly fazes me, and I’m also really excited. This is pretty standard fare for me since I do pretty much the same thing with SnM, but to be able to do it in real life is fun! finally I can put those leadership skills to good use, right? =) And maybe this time during rehearsal I can actually attempt to get everyone to understand the aesthetics of stage weight and position improvisation.

Until later, over and out. I need to finish cleaning.

Weekend + last week of school~!

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

Well, my weekend was about as eventful as it could get. I attended the theatre performance by the Fine Arts Academy for children Saturday morning since my siblings were in the cast for one of the skits (Three Stories from Wayside School), and after that I went to Emily’s house to attend a bridal shower for my friend Faith, who’s getting married in three weeks up in Kentucky. Emily’s place is so gorgeous, it makes me look around my house and think, “wow, I live in a trash heap.” Despite not knowing what to expect from this whole bridal shower business, I had fun being with my friends - and the food was awesome too ;D

Sunday, I performed in the Love from China benefit event for the victims of the natural disasters over in East Asia. My sister was the first dance, so I arrived at Barton Creek mall around 1:30pm and stayed there until 6:30pm. For the first two hours I walked around with three younger children in tow to hand out fliers and ask for donations. We were pretty much kicked out of Nordstrom for soliciting, but I played the innocence card pretty well. My performances were at 3:30 and 5:30 respectfully, and I gave my speech after our dance at the 3:30 one. I went pretty well, if I do say so myself, although the formations were all off so I ended up having to move myself around to accomodate the change, as always, seeing as how I’m the only person with a sense of aesthetics in stage weight. Yeah… maybe I am a theatre/dance nerd after all.

There were some really nice performances, and there were some that were kind of… meh. But overall I think we raised quite a bit of money so I was happy to be there to help out. Afterwards, I headed to Trina’s apartment complex for her birthday party. It was -technically- a pool party but I didn’t want to partake in any aquatic recreation at the time, so we all sat there and ate and talked and socialized instead. We ended up being kicked out at 10pm, but for the most part it was fun. There were at least 12 people who arrived (not everyone stayed the full time) so never a boring moment, haha.

This is my official last week of school, and guess what I’m doing all of today? That’s right. Programming for Computer Science. How lovely =)
